After winning the Félix award in the category Alternative Album of the Year, at the 2009 ADISQ Gala, after a Polaris prize nomination and more than an hundred shows across Canada, the United States and Europe, the Labyrinthes (Out February 2009 on Dare To Care Records) adventure has finally come to an end. After the release of Contrôle, a limited EP release of four songs, and many shows at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the band is now composing what will be their fourth album, the aftermath of the epic and critic acclaimed Labyrinthes, set to be release somewhere at the end of 2010, early 2011.

The pop/rock group litteraly took over the indie rock scene over the years, since the release of their debut record Le Compte Complet (2004) and more recently has drawn a wide amount of praise for their second album Trompe-l’Oeil (2006), a masterpiece that found his way of springing out of the already artistically rich local music scene, with their unique and original sound. Labyrinthes (2009) confirmed that the band was one of the most prolific and talented band from Montreal.

In addition of proudly winning five Felix over the years in their native province, Malajube has extensively toured the country and abroad playing festivals and events such as the SXSW, CMJ Music Marathon, Osheaga, Les Eurokéenes and Les Francofolies de Montréal, turning on industry-heads and listeners alike. Regardless of the language barrier, Trompe-l’Oeil was released in the U.S. on Dare to Care label, (October 31st, 2006) in Europe, (on the German label City Slang in Spring 2007) and in Japan. The band achieved to please critics from all around; The New York Times, NME, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, Wired, Fader, Filter, Spin, Penthouse, Men’s Health Journal, Vanity Fair and more, all praising Malajube’s music in a voice unison.

Malajube sounded positively epic at Metropolis. It was a nice jolt to my system.
Bill Pearis, Brooklyn Vegan, M for Métropolis review, November 2009

The foursome has an impressively large musical skill set: They can deliver strummy, melodic power-pop full of jangly guitars and spry, bouncing rhythms. Then they can turn on a dime and dish up noisy indie-rock fuelled by driving beats and big chords. Or they can shift gears again into proggy art-rock, skanking reggae, rich Beatle-pop or a host of other styles. And all of it's topped with vocals that can literally move from a whisper to a scream in a heartbeat.
    Darryl Sterdan, Sun Media
    , M for Métropolis review, November 2009

[...] but the band remains one of the more musically intriguing acts to come out of Canada in recent years, an improbable but compelling mix of catchy power-pop and prog-rock [...] Their set was by far the tightest of the bands I saw at the M For Montreal showcase, if not the most energetic
Andy Hermann, Metromix New York, CMJ October 2009 Review

After a few drinks and a palatable opening act, we were finally treated to the mind-blowing experience that is a Malajube concert.
Sophie Sheldrick, Beat Magazine, London, ON November 3rd 2009 Show review

Labyrinthes is an album surely to end up on many “best of” lists at the end of 2009.
    Michael Gerbrandt, Earshot, February 2009

More assured and ambitious than on their breakthrough predecessor, Malajube proves they are way more than merely a francophone wannabe Arcade Fire. They’re one of the most inspired groups around today, no matter what language you speak.
    Juan Rodriguez, The Gazette

The expectations floating around this album are huge, and the music here, absolutely and unequivocally, more than lives up to them.
    Brendan Murphy, Hour

…But more importantly, they kinda fucking rock (and might be part of the reason we always accidentally typo their city “Monstreal”).
    pitchfork.com, 2006

On a night that felt like –40 degrees, Montreal’s Malajube brought the hot rock. The new album, Trompe-L’oeil, is a sweet pop trill.
    CMJ report on pitchfork.com, 2006

Merc’s Thursday night lineup was one of the sure shots on the night (along with the Sub Pop showcase at Bowery), made all the more special ‘cause Malajube’s set was the band’s American debut (and we were not missing it). We had unreasonably high expectations for the show (you could  say we’re “fans”), and still the Malajubers blew us away. […] An absolute highlight of the entire marathon.
    stereogum.com, 2006/11/06

…Not only is it one of the finest Canadian albums of the year, but it’s a huge one for Canada’s Francophone music community, one that’s managed to attract the attention of people outside Quebec, opening a small, hitherto unknown musical scene to a much larger audience. Vous avez attiré notre attention, mes amis. Keep the great music coming.
    popmatters.com, 2006

…With Malajube, anything is possible. The music is pretty, chaotic, playful, and catchy as hell. Granted, I can’t tell you what exactly they’re singing about—cranberry juice? Crabs? Tourette’s syndrome? Runny noses? I’m still going to sing along as if I did.
    Seattle Weekly, 2006/11/01

Band To Watch: Malajube - The first track's melodramatic moments (and that Montreal mailbox) may elicit an Arcade Fire name check, but Malajube are so much more; the band stuffs more styles and ideas into one song than most serve up on a full length!
    Stereogum.com

Already a contender for album of the year, this sophomore effort by Montreal's Malajube is the best francophone indie-rock release in recent memory…This is a big record, a great record, by what could very well be your new favourite Montreal band.
    T'cha Dunlevy, The Gazette

…Malajube get it right every time on this fantastic sophomore record.

    Vish Khanna, Exclaim!

…Malajube have already won over a fair amount of anglo Quebecers, and hopefully this album will continue to break barriers and get the (international) attention it deserves.
    8.5/10 Lorraine Carpenter, Montreal Mirror

…even if your French studies are limited to reading the other side of cereal box, any language barriers are bulldozed by the pure, unrelenting, ecstatic energy at play here. […] La Belle Province just got a little more beller.
    SB, Eye Weekly

Malajube, Malajube, Malajube.

    Pierre Siankowski, Les Inrockuptibles

Malajube is confirmation that the inordinate attention paid to the anglo music scene can cross linguistic boundaries. Their invitation to play Toronot’s NXNE Festival proves the foursome’s candy-coated melodies, ironically irrevelant lyrics and massive sound speaks – you guessed it – an international language.
Violaine Charest-Sigouin, En Route (Air Canada)

No wonder these Montrealers are getting so much attention. Their new debut album is a near-perfect pop record.

    Johnson Cummins, Montreal Mirror

    Naive yet clear musical vision…
    Now Toronto

Quirkily pretty franco-pop from Montreal might be the next shit.

Sarah Liss, Now Toronto, Critic’s Picks

    Cubes Rubiques, Voivod and Malajube!

    news

Did you miss Cubes Rubiques last night at the FrancoFolies? Oh no! It was the concert of the year! Read it for yourself! (If you can read french, if not, watch the video!)

    In dubiis abstine

Following last week's little online scandal concerning Katie Costello's possible plagiarization of Malajube's song Ton plat favori, Bonsound, the managers of Malajube, would like to clear things up for the journalists, the curious music lovers and for Malajube's and Katie Costello's fans. As the saying goes, "when in doubt, forbear".

Bonsound is presently collecting all relative information surrounding this affair.

Bonsound and Malajube do not in any way, want to count one's chickens before they're hatched, nor jump to any false conclusions.

In the meantime, let's all take a moment to watch the super video for Ton plat favori and look back at what a great year 2006 was and thank the sky up above that so many great proverbs exist to help us get through these hard times.
