A certain steadiness is necessary to lead Perreau's kind of multidirectional life, spreading his creativity as he has since his days fronting Doc et les Chirurgiens in the late '90s to different areas of the globe - like California, Arizona and Europe - and in the arts, like puppetry. His musical persona returns with this first solo album, and his core is as solid as ever. Linguistically inventive, the album is sophisticated and evocative, successfully melding an instrumental base (structured around an omnipresent piano) and more ethereal tech. The overall imagery is compellingly haunting in a lonely kind of way - like an empty circus ground at dusk - and yet something falls flat. There's something just too monotonic here - a stability teetering on the edge of immobility. I say we turn the circus lights back on.
