The Dagons - Reverse

On Reverse, their fourth long-player, the Dagons songwriting continues to grow in confidence. Drummer Drew Kowalskis trash-can thumb--not to mention the occasional scuzzy synthesizer and sitarduels with Karie Jacobsons sweethly semisane singing, which itself is in constant fisticuffs with her own reverbed, rusty guitar-strumming. Between harrowing battles (It Flies Out, Planchettes Half-Apes, Reverse)lie spooky, mostly instrumental squalls, ressembling Sonic Youth Bad Moon Rising just over L.A.s desert edge. The Dagons tension arrive at some catchy truces (Not Enough, Pinafore) that, along with a more consident touring schedule of late, suggest the band may be ready to step into the sun after all the nights of drunken gravestone-tipping.
