About Mark Clennon
Toronto-based artist Mark Clennon makes future soul music that manages to sound both grandiose and humble at the same time, all while touching base on a variety of different genres. The crooner delivers honest, touching lyrics with a powerful voice over sweeping tracks. The result: music with outsized emotional resonance and captivating soul. Clennon’s lyricism and versatile beats mesh symbiotically with one another, empowering his overall sound while edging audiences seductively towards climax.
Clennon’s creative process is less about drawing in influences and more so about chiselling them into something unique. Born in Jamaica to a musical family, Clennon’s father was a Trenchtown-bred saxophone player while his brother became a successful dancehall producer. Participation in Jamaican Pantomimes while growing up inspired him to take a theatrical approach to his music, reflected today in his attention to aesthetics, erratic dance moves and his compelling stage presence.
Passion is Clennon’s sophomore follow-up to his debut EP When the Smoke Clears. The project was produced entirely by production duo Rainer + Grimm, known most commonly for their work with fellow Torontonian The Weeknd on Wicked Games and Drake’s Shot For Me. The 4-track extended play showcases the artist at his most sincere, addressing some of his deepest concerns –emotional disappointment, lack of societal acceptance, and whether destiny will work in his favour, among other daunting thoughts. While Clennon lets his lyricism do a lot of the talking on Passion, it is the music behind the voice that evokes feeling in listeners. As others may rely on machismo and boasting to heighten their music, Clennon flips the script and allows his own vulnerability to become his strongest pillar.
