Jonathan Personne unveils the new single Rock & roll sur ton chemin and announces the details of his upcoming album

Today, Jonathan Personne presents Rock & roll sur ton chemin, an homage to this agonizing musical genre whose demise has been announced repeatedly, but that many insist on keeping alive. This new single follows the release Un homme sans visage, unveiled back in April. The Montreal-based musician, also known as the singer and guitarist of the post-punk band Corridor, also announces the release of his third album and first full-length record on Bonsound. Available now for pre-order (vinyl, CD and digital formats), the eponymous album produced by Emmanuel Éthier is due out on August 26th, 2022.

With Rock & roll sur ton chemin, Jonathan Personne pays tribute to the dying arts and to those who still practice them, almost relentlessly. Devoting oneself to a genre destined to failure, there’s something pathetic about it, but also something very beautiful, says the musician.

Jonathan Personne ties together content and form, delivering a rock song with sustained intensity and an irresistibly catchy guitar riff. Rock & roll sur ton chemin stands out for its cyclical and dynamic structure that features various unexpected instrumental layers, including Mellotron, bongo and whistles.

This rather peculiar mishmash of a song is a reflection of Jonathan Personne's third album, a collection of eight tracks that unfold like a series of gloomy tales with vivid and explosive musical dynamics. At once candid and sinister, light and brutal, this new self-titled album is built on a striking duality, announced from the start by its cover - an illustration by Personne on which two children discover the remains of a dead body. Thus, the groundwork is laid for the unveiling of a mysterious world where ghostly spirits, strange entities and characters with broken destinies intertwine.

Composed alone with his acoustic guitar in a cottage, Jonathan Personne took an unexpected turn when the Montreal singer-songwriter went back into the studio with his friends Samuel Gougoux (drums), Julian Perreault (guitar), Mathieu Cloutier (bass) and Emmanuel Éthier (production, violin, synthesizer, Mellotron, vocals).

Between 60s pop references with synthetic arrangements, folk-country inspiration based on western-spaghetti imagery, samples from obscure TV shows or movies, and blistering rock grooves with extravagant guitar licks, Jonathan Personne’s upcoming release is a more polished and less lo-fi record than the rest of his repertoire, but in an equally inventive and unpredictable manner.

Jonathan Personne will celebrate this new release with an album launch concert at the Fairmount Theatre on September 28th, presented as part of POP Montreal. Other dates are scheduled in Quebec this fall. Check out the list below for all his show dates.
