On October 1st, 2004, Jean-Christian Aubry, Gourmet Délice, Yanick Masse and Pierre Gourde officially founded Bonsound, a Montreal-based management, show and promotion company. The goal was to meet the needs of independent artists considered “too alternative” by the big industry players at the time, while still propelling their careers beyond the DIY scene. Twenty years on, it is clear that the objective behind the company's purpose has been achieved time and time again.
Over the years, Bonsound has contributed to the success of artists from a wide variety of musical backgrounds, including Malajube, DJ Champion, Lisa LeBlanc, Safia Nolin, Dead Obies, Pierre Kwenders, Les Louanges, Elisapie and many others. Meanwhile, the company, which now employs over 30 people, has diversified its services to meet the demands of the ever-changing music industry. Bonsound released its first album as a label in 2008 and has marketed more than 100 albums since then. In 2011, the company developed Bonsound Concerts to act as a show promoter for local and international artists. In 2017, Bonsound created its own publishing company, Les éditions Bonsound, which represents the work of more than 25 authors and composers. More recently, the company created Session, a music distribution service that caters to a wide range of artists and independent labels.
To mark its 20th anniversary, Bonsound has launched blog.bonsound.com, a platform dedicated to the publication of editorial content written by the company's staff. Check out the first chapter of our series about the history of Bonsound for a glimpse into the Montreal music scene of the early aughts.
