Magi Merlin presents a glimpse into her creative process with a captivating live session for BOOTY, the second song from her latest EP A Weird Little Dog. Shot, directed and edited by Vladim Vilain, the video shows Magi on vocals and long-time collaborator Funkywhat on bass while showcasing their extensive use of effects pedals.
BOOTY is my way of speaking up about our current world systems, explains the Montreal-based artist. It's a rally and a call to action. We are powerful, even when the system tries to convince us otherwise. If we created this world, why can't we reimagine it, why can’t we rewrite the rules? Let us aspire to power, not for ourselves but for everyone around us.
Magi Merlin describes the session as a labour of love: Funkywhat and I were able to play music that we are so proud of in the most beautiful of spaces, captured in the most beautiful way. If ever I needed a reminder of what is important, I can turn to this session as it is the physical manifestation of community and it is very dear to me. It was filmed at the loft of multidisciplinary artist Fanny-Jane, who is also responsible for the set decorations and Magi’s dress and rings.* She had just finished painting the floors of her loft blue before we were getting ready to shoot*, adds Magi.
After opening for contemporary jazz musician Nubya Garcia on her North American tour in April, Magi Merlin is now set to perform at both the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival in the next few weeks, among others.
